Swami Sivamurti Saraswati was born in Australia. She met her guru, the great spiritual luminary, Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati, in Munger, India and after being trained and initiated into the Dashnami order of Sannyasa, she brought the teachings of Satyananda Yoga to Greece in 1976. Following her guru’s mandate, she established Satyanandashram Hellas in 1984. Since then, she has been safeguarding the integrity, tradition, authenticity and the high quality of teaching of Satyananda Yoga in Greece. In 1993, Swami Sivamurti was recognized as a Yoga Acharya (Master of Yoga) by the International Yoga Fellowship Movement (IYFM), in 2004 she was appointed as a permanent guardian of the Satyananda Yoga Academy of Europe (SYAE).Under her inspiration and guidance, Satyananda Yoga Meditation Centers were set up in Athens, Thessaloniki and Paiania.  In 2007 she created the PanHellenic  Satyananda Women’s Groups which aim to cultivate the strengths inherent in every woman through the myriad of yogic techniques and practices within the Satyananda Yoga Tradition, as well as support the aims of Satyananda Math – Amba.

Under her guidance, Gurukul programs have been running for over 20 years. Children (ages 5-12) participate in specialized yoga programs. The Give Kids Yoga is a recent project in the pipe – line aimed at introducing yoga practices into the public and private education systems in Greece. Along with conducting educational programs in the Satyananda System of Yoga since 1982 and teacher training courses, Swami Sivamurti established Enosi (the Teacher’s Union)  in 2014 and since 2019 has been running Sangha Teacher Development sessions. From 2017 she has been handing over administrative activities to the next generation in order to give herself more time for projects dear to her, such as the development of SATYANANDA MATH – Amba, the philanthropic arm of the ashram which although it started its activities in 1991, took impetus in 2017 when it became the legal entity of Satyananda Math.  In 2019, she inspired the formation of the Hellenic Federation of Yoga (HYF), comprised of a number of associations and organizations involved in the teaching of the Satyananda System of Yoga. Another evolving project is the establishment of the Friends of Satyananda Yoga for those who have been benefited by the practices of Satyananda Yoga over the years, and who want to support, assist and be part of the many varying current and future activities relating to Satyananda Yoga in Greece. Since 1990, much work has been done in disseminating the teachings of Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati and Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati, which have been translated into Greek. Swami Sivamurti herself has authored many books, the most recent being In his Footsteps (2019), a dedication and tribute to her guru Sri Swami Satyananda. In 2017 a year-long Yatra was conducted throughout Greece to celebrate the 40 years of Satyananda Yoga in Greece. Since the early 80s, she has been travelling throughout Greece, the Balkans and other countries in the world giving seminars and lectures on yoga, and participating in conferences and festivals to spread the richness of the Satyananda Yoga tradition.
