Yoga Classes in Grevena Prison

The implementation of yoga programs in prisons offers meaningful benefits for the mental and physical health of inmates, while also improving daily life within the correctional environment.
Since 2017, SATYANANDA MATH – Amba ® has been offering free weekly yoga classes for inmates at the Grevena Correctional Facility, with a short interruption during the COVID-19 pandemic and the first half of 2026.
The classes last one and a half hours and are guided by trained teachers of the Satyananda system of yoga, aiming to support the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of the participants.
Psychological & Social Benefits
- Reduction of violence — the practice helps reduce aggression toward others and toward oneself.
- Emotional calmness — it cultivates inner peace and supports the management of anxiety and depression.
- Integration— it allows inmates to interact with their environment in a calmer and more balanced way.
- Development of self-control — it strengthens skills of inner management and emotional balance.
- Improved relationships — the group nature of the classes encourages understanding and connection.
Physical Benefits
- Physical strengthening — increased muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility, all essential in a restricted environment.
- Improved sleep quality — yoga helps address insomnia and improves sleep, which is often disrupted in prison conditions.
- Relief from pain — it may reduce chronic pain, particularly in the lower back and spine.
- Moments of calm — it creates opportunities for relaxation within the difficult prison environment.
- Renewal of energy — it allows inmates to “recharge” physically and emotionally.
Participants report improved self-awareness, emotional balance, and behavior — benefits also recognized by fellow inmates, highlighting the transformative role of yoga in personal growth and social reintegration.
